Precision Nutrition - Recent Advances and Controversies in Genetic Testing
Ahmed El-Sohemy, PhD 6:00pm to 7:00pm 1.0 CPEU Description:
Learning Objectives:
Performance Indicators:
Speaker Bio:
Recording
CPE and Slides
Description:
There is increasing awareness among researchers, educators, healthcare professionals and consumers that the one-size-fits-all, population-based approach to nutritional guidance is inefficient and sometimes ineffective. Genetic differences can explain some of these different responses and randomized controlled trials show that giving DNA-based dietary advice can be superior to population-based recommendations for improving compliance. With increasing consumer awareness and demand for genetic testing, there is a need for registered dietitian nutritionists to have sufficient knowledge to understand the science behind these tests, and determine the benefits and limitations of both the science and the testing. Learning Objectives:
Performance Indicators:
• 4.1.2 Interprets and integrates evidence-based research and literature in decision-making • 8.1.1 Interprets and applies evidence-based literature and standards for determining nutritional needs of target audiences. • 9.4.6 Demonstrates competent use of technology to enhance learning experiences and the delivery of information. Speaker Bio:
Dr. Ahmed El-Sohemy is a Professor and Associate Chair at the University of Toronto. He is also the Founder of Nutrigenomix Inc., serves as Chief Science Officer and is Chair of the company’s International Science Advisory Board. Dr. El-Sohemy obtained his PhD from the University of Toronto and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard. He has published in the top scientific and medical journals with over 200 peer-reviewed publications and has given more than 300 invited talks around the world. He is currently Specialty Chief Editor of Nutrigenomics for Frontiers in Nutrition and Editor-in-Chief of Genes and Nutrition while serving on the editorial board of ten other scientific and medical journals. Dr. El-Sohemy has been a member of international expert advisory panels and the scientific advisory boards of several organizations. His research has garnered considerable media attention and has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Toronto Star, Globe & Mail, Vogue, GQ and Prevention magazine, as well as several other international TV and print media. What is Legislative Day?
- Time set aside by congressional offices to speak to voters on issues that matter to them AND speak to those who are subject matter experts in that area.
- This is our opportunity to voice support for legislation that impacts areas of nutrition and public health (MNT reimbursement, food insecurity and food assistance, obesity treatment, and dietitian licensure).
- This allows congressional offices to determine support for bills and strengthens the likelihood congress will pass bills that strengthen nutrition and public health policy.
- This year the day will be virtual, so you can join from work or home and make your voice heard regardless of whether or not you can attend the conference.
- Complete the Google forms survey to express interest in which sessions you wish to attend (your specific representatives for your area vs all sessions)
- Provide your contact info so we can send you the links to join the April 26th sessions!
PRIOR TO LEGISLATIVE DAY, WATCH THE TRAINING VIDEO BELOW TO BE READY FOR THE LIVE VIRTUAL MEETING.
After you register you will receive a calendar invite with the link for the sessions you signed up for.

10:00 to 10:30 (30 minute Lecture & Discussion) This session is part of an emerging Energy Balance Initiative (EBI) which is a "Call to Action" for RDNs and NDTRs to be proactive in including energy balance assessments and individualized recommendations (kcal/d requirements) into every nutrition care plan. Dr. St. Jeor will present the limitations of the current equation and discuss different programs and approaches being evaluated to improve the assessments and resulting recommendations. She will define weight maintenance (WM) as a new frontier for successful weight management and propose weight changes/fluctuations as clinical indicators (vital signs) to evaluate outcomes.
10:30 to 11:00 (30 minute Lecture & Discussion) Dr. Forzani will present new technology, the background and application of indirect calorimetry to measure Resting Energy Expenditure and Respiratory Quotient.
11:00 to 11:30 Lecture/Demonstration (Limited "Hands on Training with 2 pairs). A Live Lecture/Demonstration Training Session on the Indirect Calorimeter led by Dr. Forzani will be held in an adjacent room.

11:00 to 11:30 Lecture/Demonstration (Limited "Hands on Training with 2 pairs). A Live Lecture/Demonstration Training Session on the Indirect Calorimeter led by Dr. Forzani will be held in an adjacent room.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe 3 current limitations to the energy balance equation and suggest solutions. 2. Define weight maintenance (WM) and weight fluctuations (WF) and list at least 3 factors that could affect the accurate interpretation over time. 3. List 3 advantages of applying indirect calorimetry vs. the Mifflin-St. Jeor Equation in the EB Assessment. 4. Explain how the MSJE/IDC ratio can be helpful in interpreting results.
Performance Indicators:
4.1 Demonstration of sound professional judgment and strategic thinking in practice 4.1.5 Demonstration of effective, appropriate and timely consultation with experts and others. 3.1.2 Fosters a culture in which diversity and cross-tem collaboration is valued.
Speakers Bios:
Dr. Sachiko St. Jeor is Professor Emerita of Clinical Medicine, at the University of Nevada School of Medicine here in Reno. She is a 50 year member of the AND and a member of our Reno, NvAND. She is President and CEO of St. Jeor Nutrition Associates, PLLC (dba GenQuest Nutrition) and Director of their Energy Balance Initiative. This "initiative" builds on the Mifflin-St. Jeor Equation which is used world-wide for the prediction of Resting Energy Expenditure. With new technologies and methods available, she believes the TIME IS NOW to improve and personalize the energy balance equation. Thus, this presentation is a "Call to Action" for RDNs and NDTRs to take the lead of the interprofessional weight management team by integrating energy balance assessments (kcal/d) and recommendations to promote "weight maintenance as the new frontier for successful weight management overall. Practices will be enhanced and new opportunities will ensue.
